Foodborne Disease Market

Foodborne Disease Market: Global Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends, and Forecast, 2025-2035

Foodborne Disease: Introduction

Foodborne Disease continue to be a global public health issue, with an estimated 600 million people being ill each year. In response, international regulations are growing more stringent, posing problems to food trading.

Given the growing burden of foodborne diseases, many Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) countries have upgraded their food laws and altered the organizational structure of their regulatory institutions in order to maintain or expand international export activities, tighten control over local and imported products, and protect consumer health.

However, until now, available information on the regional health costs of foodborne infections has been limited, and it is unclear whether the current revisions will contribute to science-based and effective preventative activities, as well as the adoption of a risk management approach.

Despite a lack of information, we describe the most current food safety issues and the national food control systems of selected nations in the region. To that purpose, we assessed national food safety systems in light of the five important features of the FAO/WHO Guidelines for Strengthening National Food Control Systems.

Increasing cases of foodborne disease is expected to drive the foodborne disease market

The increased global incidence of foodborne infections is driving considerable growth in the foodborne disease diagnostics and management industry. Foodborne diseases are caused by consuming contaminated food or beverages, which are frequently infected with pathogens like bacteria, viruses, and parasites.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), foodborne diseases affect approximately 600 million people each year, causing serious health complications, hospitalizations, and even deaths, particularly in vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and immunocompromised people.

This rising incidence has spurred governments, healthcare organizations, and the food sector to improve testing and monitoring systems, invest in modern diagnostic technologies, and impose strict food safety rules.

For instance, according to World Health Organization (WHO), each year an estimated 600 million people fall ill and 420,000 people die from unsafe food, resulting in the loss of 33 million healthy life years. Moreover, children under 5 years of age are at particularly high risk, with 125 000 children dying from foodborne diseases every year. These illnesses and deaths are largely preventable.

Growing Government Initiatives Pertaining to Foodborne Disease is Attributed to Drive Overall Foodborne Disease Market

Growing government initiatives pertaining to foodborne disease is expected to drive the foodborne disease market. For instance, in December 2024, the FDA issued the 2024 edition of the Voluntary National Retail Food Regulatory Program Standards, which defines the key elements of an effective retail food regulatory program for state, local, tribal, and territorial food regulatory agencies.

The Retail Program Standards include recommendations for designing and managing retail food initiatives, as well as recognizing programs that show progress in implementing the standards. They provide a foundation and system upon which all regulatory retail food programs can build through a continuous improvement process.

Moreover, in December the FDA updated the outbreak advisory for Salmonella Typhimurium infections linked to cucumbers. As of November, 2024, a total of 68 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella have been reported from 19 states. Of the 50 people for whom information is available, 18 have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported. Of the 33 people interviewed, 27 (82%) reported eating cucumbers.

In November, 2024, SunFed Produce, LLC initiated a voluntary recall of all sizes of American/slicer cucumbers that were grown by Agrotato, S.A. de C.V. in Sonora, Mexico.

In November, 2024, Baloian Farms of Arizona Co., Inc. initiated a voluntary recall of all sizes of American/slicer cucumbers that were grown by Agrotato, S.A. de C.V. Furthermore, in December 2024, Russ Davis Wholesale initiated a voluntary recall of American/slicer cucumbers and multiple products containing recalled cucumbers.

The FDA is working with the recalling firms and their direct customers to determine if additional downstream customer recalls are necessary. The FDA’s investigation is ongoing.

By Treatment Type, the Antidiarrheal segment accounted for the largest share in the foodborne disease market

The Antidiarrheal drug type holds the largest market share, owing to the growing number of approvals and launch for foodborne disease. For instance, in March 2024, Taiho Pharmaceutical launched Solmack Q-Arl D, Chewable Tablets for Diarrhea Caused by Overeating and Overdrinking that Can Be Taken Anywhere Without Water.

Similarly, in July 2024, Amneal Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and Steriscience today announced the launch of FOCINVEZ a ready-to-use injectable. Unlike other versions of fosaprepitant, this single-dose vial product is free of Polysorbate 80 and does not require reconstitution or dilution and can be administered directly from the vial using the included vial hanger.

The product has been in-licensed from and is manufactured by Steriscience, a global sterile injectables company, and developed by SPES Pharmaceuticals, a specialized R&D firm that focuses on creating proprietary new formulations.

North America to Lead the Foodborne Disease Market

North America dominates the foodborne disease market, owing to its strong product pipeline and an increasing number of U.S. FDA approvals across the region, which is contributing to the region’s marker share of 41.4% in 2024. For instance, February 2025, AbbVie, announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved EMBLAVEO (aztreonam and avibactam), as the first and only fixed-dose, intravenous, monobactam/β-lactamase inhibitor combination antibiotic.

It is approved in combination with metronidazole, for patients 18 years and older who have limited or no alternative options for the treatment of complicated intra-abdominal infections (cIAI), including those caused by the following susceptible Gram-negative microorganisms: Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Klebsiella oxytoca, Enterobacter cloacae complex, Citrobacter freundii complex, and Serratia marcescens. Approval of this indication is based on limited clinical safety and efficacy data for EMBLAVEO.
