Artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL) are the key trends in the healthcare sector, particularly in the endoscopy domain. AI has the potential to improve the quality of endoscopy at all levels.

The number of patients with colorectal (colon) cancer is rising across the globe every year. According to data published by the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of newly diagnosed patients with colorectal cancer surged from around 1.02 million in 2002 to nearly 1.9 million new colorectal cancers (including anus) in 2020. Furthermore, approximately 935,000 colorectal cancer deaths were reported in 2020, representing 1 in 10 cancer cases and deaths. This makes prevention and treatment an urgent health challenge.
If detected in the early phase, colorectal cancer can be cured using colonoscopy and other procedures. Early detection could enable the cancer to be removed by a minimally invasive surgery during a colonoscopy. Furthermore, AI-assisted colonoscopy improves characterization in colonoscopy and polyp detection. In August 2022, Medtronic, a prominent leader in medical technology, announced the official launch of ‘AI Powered GI Genius Module for Colonoscopy,’ which provides enhanced visualization for colorectal cancer detection. Colorectal cancer is the second prominent cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. and Europe, owing to the high percentage of adenomas (almost 26%) that endoscopists miss while conducting endoscopy. Hence, various healthcare startups are developing advanced endoscopy devices.
In September 2022, Iterative Scopes, a pioneer in precision medicine technologies for gastroenterology, announced that SKOUT received FDA 510(k) clearance for adults undergoing colorectal cancer surveillance. In November 2019, AI Medical Service, Inc., one of the world's first real-time endoscopic AI developers, announced that it had secured FDA approval for its AI programs, which analyze endoscopy images for potential diagnosis of stomach cancer.
In December 2022, Olympus Corporation, a global med-tech company, announced its role in a project in collaboration with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), a cabinet ministry in the Government of Japan. The project aims to conduct a survey study for global expansion of AI diagnosis support system along with education for surgeons in Vietnam.
